Welcome to Nodaniya. This Gassho-Zukuri was built 150 years ago and is perfect for guests looking to experience Japan in a very traditional way. It has 4 traditional Japanese-style guest rooms. At the Nodaniya none of the guest rooms have a private bath or toilet. From their room guest can enjoy the view on the pond or on the waterwheel. Homemade Japanese-style cuisine, especially fresh vegetables from the mountain are served to the guests at Nodaniya.

Warning: In winter, it's not possible to go there by car. Please go there by bus. (there is no parking available because of snow).

Good to know: There is a lot of snow in Shirakawa-go in January and February so please bring a pair of boots. Shirakawa-go can get up to 2 meters (over 6 feet) of snow in February.
Like most Farmhouses, Nodaniya is a small family business, so please forgive them if sometimes they do not accept that you leave your luggage after check-out. Nodaniya does not speak English though they welcome foreigners almost everyday, so sometimes contact or conversations might be limited to the minimum.

Fantastic! For the last 10 years we visit Japan annually and spend ~9 days, the night we spent in Shirokawa-Go and at Nodaniya house was one of our best experiences. Accommodations in the gassho-zukuri were simple but cozy, clean and amazing food! The quality of the kaiseki dinner with the Hida beef and grilled fish was outstanding - as good as many of the high-end onsen ryokans we've stayed at. The ability to leisurely wander the village because we stayed overnight made our experience so memorable. Thank you to our delightful hostess and all the residents of the village for allowing us to experience a simpler life ...

We really enjoyed staying at this Ryokan. Especially the host, she was really nice and her staff as well . Even though they speak in japanese we can clearly understand them from the way they do the hand gesture. Their food was super delicious and we have enjoyed it we were able to taste their traditional food, very clean place and I like how the traditional the room is and comfortable as well. We will definitely come back and recommend to others. Thank you for letting us stay.

Location is too far from the bus stop. If there is snow, may face very hard with luggage. Dinner is very perfect. But breakfast is too little. It's not enough for us. Room is traditional style, the wall is very soft. Toilet and bathroom are very perfect. Clean, enough for everybody, facility is full sets with hair dryer. The owner is very kind. We’re sure to visit there again.

From the bus stop, we walked about 20 minutes on a straight flat road to reach the place with 4 big luggages and 3 smaller luggages. We had to stop couple times along the way as we have old person and a kid in the group. I couldn’t imagine If it were snowing. We were given 2 rooms for 4 people. As it was so cold so you need to keep the portable heater on through the night. The heater shutdown every 3 hours and you need to keep waking up to turn the heater on. There was no hot water for common basin area (for brushing teeth and washing hands). Dinner was fantastic with lots of meat and fish. Breakfast was ok as we couldn’t eat most of them on the set. The owner of the house and others staffs were amazing.

From the Nohi bus stop, we walked about 20 minutes on a straight flat road to reach Nodaniya. There are shops, cafes and other thatched houses to view along the way. If it were snowing, we'd probably not be able to get there on foot with trolley luggages in tow but in early Dec, it was a do-able walk. We were given 2 rooms for 4 people. One of the rooms at the end was not as insulated so was chilly if you dont keep the portable heater on through the night. Else the bedding and heating in room was nice and toasty, with plenty of hot water for showers (common shower). But no hot water for common basin area (for brushing teeth and washing hands). A charming house, full of atmosphere. Loved the dining room with open hearth and wonderful full course dinner and breakfast. Food alone made it worth all the while. Would stay again.

Amazing stays at Nodaniya. The host was very welcoming even though they didn't speak english (just some basic on check-in an dinner time). We arrived early in the morning and we can leave our luggage first. The whole ryokan was sparkling clean. When we come back in the evening for check-in, they've already put our luggage inside our room (how nice of them ^^). Dinner & breakfast prepared by Nodaniya were amazing. Every meal i had in Shirakawa-Go were exceptionally amazing tbh (managed to have lunch in one of the restaurant in the village) The village got crowded with tourist during the day, but wait a little past lunch time, the crowd were lessened by quite some. This was my 2nd time in Shirakawa-Go and I'm still mesmerized by the whole atmosphere of this village. And still hoping to come back here during winter tbh. Even though the village is not that big, every corners and nooks are so beautiful. Some says that at night the skies are full of stars. Too bad during our stays, it was cloudy.

Stay here overnight Will help you to experience the true lifestyle of the villagers without many tourists. Nodaniya is more convenient than you think The accommodation seems to be old from the outside. But was surprised to find that the interior was new and very clean, like a luxury hotel. The staff are friendly and they also give many guests freedom so we don't feel uncomfortable. Importantly, dinner and breakfast are beyond description. With coffee for breakfast.

We had a fantastic stay at Nodaniya. Our host was very welcoming and the dinner and breakfast prepared for us was delicious. Especially welcome was the option to buy sake and beer! Even in the November cold, the room was warm and one of our cosiest and comfiest nights during our trip to Japan. Shirakawago itself is amazing and it's well worth staying the night to experience the town as it gets dark and quiet. Booking via Japanese Guest Houses was easy and felt trustworthy.

Shirakawa-go sounded like a tourist trap but village is quite big so not too bad. Also late afternoon and early morning nice and quiet. In the evening there is not a lot to do so early to bed... 10pm. Nodaniya has a quiet location and the old farmhouse has a lot of atmosphere. The lady running the place was very kind. We could drop luggage before check in time. The breakfast and dinner were quite good, specially if you consider the price. Two nice showers and enough toilets. Now and then you see a bug pass by, but hey this is the countryside! A simply charming place.

The atmosphere is enchanting. We have been warmly welcomed by the owner before she led us to our room. The bathroom is shared, but there are two showers and plenty of space. The food was from the region and it was amazing. The position is close to some of the main attractions: the suspension bridge, the village main road and the temples. Staying the night makes the trip to shirakawa-go much more convenient and relaxed.

Price: 12900 yen for a large bedroom for 3 people Season: warm, sunny, good weather, 21*C average Staff: run by one lady, no English but communication fine. Happy for us to leave luggage at the guesthouse after check-out time. Payment in cash only with receipt. Food: - Some of the food was served cold as it is made an hour before the set breakfast/dinner time e.g. tempura - Lots of rice available, definitely will be feeling very full afterwards - Average compared to other restaurants in Japan Location: 10 min walk from the station on the further end of Shirakawago - just a note if you are carrying big luggage Room: large, comfortable, big sliding doors, comfortable futon with warm silk doonas

This ryokan was not my top choice in term of the distance from the bus station to the ryokan but ultimately the group of 8 of us still have a pleasant stay. Owner speaks only Japanese but understand a little English, in term of communication it was a challenge but still manageable. Food is good in term of variety but the fried dishes were not that crunchy and crispy even though we were at the dinning hall on time. For guest with food restriction, special arrangement can be made weeks before your arrival but not on arrival. (Beef was replaced by pork for 2 of my friends) The futon bed was relatively thin and in some of the rooms you may be able to feel the cold wind slip through the sliding door from outside. yukata and towel were provide for every guest and hot tea in air pot was also provided in almost every room. It freaked me out when I spotted a centipede in my room but I guess that is something not uncommon if u choose to stay in a ryokan in the rural area. Anyway, the owner managed to kill the centipede and reassured me. If you are a smoker, one of the designed smoking area is just 10-20m away. There isn’t much entertainment after dinner other than the dark starry sky, hence I would suggest that you purchase one of the Onsen voucher (discounted rate at 500¥) from the owner and go for a soothing hot spring bath. Walking to and back from the onsen place in the cold night is quite an experience too.

We loved our relaxing stay at Nodinaya. So nice to be in Shirakawago when the day trippers leave! Highly recommended. The accommodation is basic but has everything you need. The hosts were welcoming, and we were very well fed. I was worried as a vegan when the website said that we couldn’t order meals without fish broth. Pleased to report there was nothing served that I wasn’t happy to eat: mostly fresh veggies steamed or in tempura, with rice of course.

Our hosts are great cooks and the whole ryokan is very clean. There are western style toilets, washing up area with hairdryer, traditional wooden tub bath and shower area (from 5pm to 9pm). Our host may not speak much English, but understood our requests very well. I was lent a pair of wellingtons as my shoes got wet and our host took the trouble to dry our shoes for us in front of the portable dryers. Our food was lovingly repaired and flavourful with local specialisties. The costs was very well worth it considering the spaciouness of the room, well kept, clean facilities and wonderful food (refillable rice and miso soup). The ryokan is situated slightly out of the tourist main path (anyway the village is tiny) and so provided a quiet stay out of prying eyes. We hope to be back at Nodaniya again .

We're a family of 5 and overall it was such a great experience staying in one of these gassho-zukuri houses. The lady host was very warm and helpful despite her very limited English. Rooms were comfortable and clean, and hot tea was served in each room. Food was great, we love the variety of dishes and the hida beef was delicious! Only thing is the place is slightly far from the bus station but we knew about it and packed light. It was a good walk as well past all the shops/stalls along the street. Highly recommended!

This ryokan is highly recommended. The host was very nice, although she spoke very limited English, we could understand her gestures. We visited during winter which was very cold, the heater in the room was strong which kept us warm and comfortable. There was also a portable heater at the basin area which kept us warm during our wash up. there is a wooden tub in the bathroom which we can soak in hot water to relax. The dinner and breakfast are delicious too. It snowed in the morning when we woke up and had a wonderful view of the houses covered in snow. The ryokan provided snow boots which we wore while we enjoyed the snowy scenery.

No English wasn't problem for us - Facilities was very clean. The room was comfortable. However our electric heater had stopped every couple hours so it's quite annoying. - Food was exceptional. We had some miscommunication regarding menu preference but the land lady had fixed it promptly. - Highly recommended!!

Love the food they served for dinner and breakfast. We are Indonesian that used to tropic climate; and dealing with somewhat cold weather can be a challenge. It is nice that they provide heated blanket and heater for the room. But if you are Asian used to warm temperature it can be a challenge staying there. However, by staying there it allow me to wake up very early in the morning and going up the hill with almost no one there. Have the hill by your self is almost magic. Love to see he fog on the mountain that morning.

Nodaniya is around 10 mins away and a straight route up from the bus station. It was raining heavily when my friends and I visited the ryokan. The host was very nice to let us leave our bulky luggages in our room despite us reaching slightly earlier than the check-in time, so that we could explore around the village before dinner. The host also brought us around the ryokan to introduce the facilities to us patiently even though we could not speak Japanese language. The room accommodates 3 of us comfortably. However, there were some bugs flying into our room as they are attracted to lights from our room. Meals served were in generous portion and they tasted very delicious! The whole ryokan is very clean and felt like a home to us. The host was also very accommodating to us and allowed us to leave our luggages in the ryokan for an hour after we checked out. There was nothing more we could ask for in Nodaniya!

The house is located on the other side of the village compared to the bus stop (from Takayama or Kanazawa) but the village is small so it doesn't take more than 10 min to walk there. The hostess was very kind and polite and she managed to explained all house rules using some english but she was well understood. The food she cooked for us was fantastic. The house also has a wooden bath tab with warm water that you can use which was so relaxing that I could stay in there for hours. All rooms were clean and tidy. Maybe the best experience I had in my 18 days trip to Japan.

Nodaniya ryokan experience exceeded our expectations. It is an authentic Japanese-style house with amazing traditional meals. Shirakawa-go is awesome and it was the best choice to experience this fabulous place in the most traditional way, staying in the Nodaniya ryokan. Although our communication with the owner was limited because we just know few words in Japanese, the attention and quality of reception, stay and food were memorable. The place is unique, cozy, beautiful and super clean. Location is great because it is in a quiet region of the town, in front of the Hachiman-jinja Shrine (don't miss the shrine museum, you can learn a little bit more about Shirakawa-go culture and believes). We loved it and we highly recommend it!

The ancient house is very beautiful and our traditional room is very spacious. The owner speaks only Japanese, but is of exquisite kindness and does her best to make herself understood. We asked for the vegetarian dinner which was plentiful and great. The ryokan is at the end of the village, in front of a temple, and therefore is immersed in peace and silence. We really enjoyed this stage of our trip.

We stayed at Nodaniya in July 2018 during the mid of heatwave that hits Japan. Nodaniya sits on the other end of the village, so it was quite a long walk from the bus station (which would have been a pleasant walk if it wasn’t so hot). The good thing about being far away thou - the area was very peaceful & quiet. To our surprise, we were the only 2 guests in the house. The host was very nice & friendly, upon our arrival she showed us the facilities and told us that we could use the bathroom anytime since we were the only guests. We took a quick shower and headed out for a stroll in the village which was then very quiet after all the day tourists had left. We came back at 6 pm for dinner which was plentiful & delicious. It was Hida beef and a whole fish although the fish was a bit cold. After dinner we walked around the village again but couldn’t find the way to the observation point, which would have been really nice to take a picture of the village at night from that spot. (My recommendation is to find that path before dark so you can go back up there at night). By evening the weather cooled down nicely and it even got a little chilly at night. Traditional bed was very comfortable, we had a really good rest. Breakfast, again was healthy and plentiful. We got to try a variety kinds of japanese pickles which were all very good. The host let us leave our bags at the house, so we could explore the village some more before catching a bus at noon time. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a real Gassho style house with friendly host in the area that isn’t too busy with tourists.

We were in Japan for our honeymoon and decided to do a night in Shirakawago at a Ryokan. We weren’t really exactly sure what to expect other than the sleeping arrangements and that they make dinner and breakfast for you. We arrived in town before checkin, but the woman we were staying with let us keep our bags at the ryokan and we explored the cute little town. We came back around 5 and she showed us to our room, and showed us where the toilets and shower was. We relaxed a little before dinner and showered at the ryokan. Very simple, basic, traditional shower at our ryokan. At dinner we wore our yukatas that the house provided which was great! It helped us feel more emerged into the culture. We went into the dining room for dinner where we had a traditional meal. The beef was amazing (this area has amazing beef!). We also had a whole fish, rice, soup, various vegetables, some pickled vegetables. Plenty of food and it was great to try everything! After that we were quite jet lagged and fell asleep shortly after dinner back in our room. In the morning we hiked up to the observatory and came back to the ryokan for breakfast. Again, a lot of food and so great getting to try all the various traditional Japanese eats! I highly recommend Nodinya! We had a wonderful stay, delicious food, and the host was so sweet! Please note she did not speak English but we were able to get by just fine! She had notes for us printed in English to help :). Very sweet and thoughtful!

Very disappointing stay, we were the only guests in this big spooky guest house, unwelcoming and inhospitable are the words that come to mind. We only saw our hostess very briefly at check-in, checkout and when she served meals and then very quickly disappeared. Meals disappointing after all the hype from other commenters, we were expecting something amazing but cold dry salted fish and lots of small dishes of pickled vegtables were what I remember. Only tea to drink no other choice, a beer would have been nice or even water ! Minimum effort from our hostess, maybe because we were the only guests. Next day, wanted to leave our luggage at the guest house after checkout so we could discover the town but the hostess refused point blank, said we had to remove it by 11:00 a.m. made us feel very unwelcome so we had to leave on the next bus to Takayama. This place was our only bad experience on an otherwise very enjoyable visit to Japan, 7 hotels and Ryokens, eveywhere else we stayed we met wonderful, kind, friendly and welcoming staff. Also, Nodaniya location at the far end of village from bus stop means a long walk with luggage. My advice to others, don't choose Nodaniya if you are staying overnight, otherwise you can see everything in a day trip from Kanazawa or Takayama. Some of the scores below should be zero, but there isn't one

We arrived at Nodaniya in a snowy afternoon, which made everything much more magical than we expected. It really was like a dream. We were very welcome at our ryokan and we were allowed to leave our luggage until check in time. When we returned at night after walking around in the town,we were thrilled to find such a lovely room, so Japanese and very comfortable. The room was warm although it was very cold outside and the lady owner managed to explain how the heater (dainichi) worked. She also cooked a great dinner, complete and delicious for us. She was amazing and so was the experience!

Staying in a traditional guesthouse Nodaniya was without a doubt, one of the best experiences we had in Japan. The place itself is a fairy town which deserve a visit, also if you can stay for a night in this traditional house you will have an amazing experience that you will never forget. The host is very friendly, she tries to explain in Japanese everything, even if you don't speak which is cute. The rooms are cozy and comfy as Japanese style, the best are the views to the mountains and wake up with the noise of the birds. The breakfast and the dinner was superb, delicious! like if your grandma cooks for you! A definite must if you want to experience something truly Japanese. I'd definitely recommended this to anyone who wants to try something local and real. Don't forget to ask for coupons to the local hot spring!

The setting was such beauty. Really. Loved every second. I wanted an authentic, traditional Japanese experience with the paper walls and outdoor sounds and it was perfect!

Very friendly hosts welcomed us - we were able to store our luggage from about 12 (as it was raining) but had to check in at 3pm. The room we had was small but had a lovely view of the sakura tree in the backyard and the distant mountains. The shared bathroom is a bit of an inconvenience especially as the holder was broken. The toilets were split into male and female, with a shared open basin outside for your morning rituals. The toilets were very clean and western style. The futons were comfortable and the in-room heater was impressive - woke up in the morning at 13 degrees and it reached 20 degrees after 2 minutes. It smelled a bit of gas though so I wouldn't be comfortable having it on overnight. Some bugs in the room that crawled in from the garden, so take someone who can kill them for you if you can't. It's a little bit further from the bus stop than some of the other minshuku but perfectly walkable with luggage.

The winter scenary in Shirakawago is just beyond description. The Ryokan host is very friendly and polite. The meal, the bed room were all great and comfort. The only downside is you will need to manually switch on the heater after certain hour(can’t recal was 3 hours or 6 hours). Anyway, definitely worth to stay and will come back again.

It’s a simple yet cozy place to stay in. The room is sufficiently spacious for 2, even with bulky backpacks. The place is near the shops so we didn’t have to walk far each time. The heater works well which was crucial as we were there during the winter season, and the rooms and toilets were clean too. The owner was very friendly and hospitable in ensuring that we were settled comfortably. For the price that we paid, the meals provided were delicious and better than expected.

Staying in a traditional guesthouse is one of the best experiences we had in Japan. This one in Ogimachi, Shirakawa-go, did not disappoint, and I will long remember the glorious feast prepared for us by the kind host who spoke only to us in Japanese, in a way that we could somehow easily understand. Up the road was an 'onsen' which we visited at night before a good, long sleep. It's at the bottom end of the village and, as the whole place is pedestrianised, it was a remarkably quiet stay.

My friend and I recently stayed a night in July 2017. It's a bit of a mission to get to the village as you have to arrive no later than 5pm and there are only a number of buses etc.... but it was totally worth it. The owner was very friendly and the room is equipped with the traditional sleeping mats and a little wrap around thing to wear (not a kimono, not sure of the name). The highlight is the food and the way you eat in the main room with the other guests. Beautifully prepared with a variety of dishes, it was definitely a food highlight of the whole trip. The village itself is gorgeous, get up early or go for a walk after dusk to avoid the day tourists. A definite must if you want to experience something truly Japanese.

When we got to the Ryokan, and rang the bell, the owner came out, she shown us the room and facilities, and told us to come back for dinner at 5:30pm. Then we put down out our belongings, and set off to see the rest of the village. when we came back, and shown to the dinning area, my two kids and husband were amazed by the presentation of the dinner set. My daughter is a vegetarian, and the owner prepared the non-meat dinner for her. She was delighted. we had a such wonderful experience staying at Nodaniya Ryokan.

Nodaniya was a highlight for our trip! Everything was amazing - the service, quality of food, sleeping quarters, and privacy (away from most of the tourists). But the real gem was the atmosphere: set just across from the doburaku sake museum and shrine, with the cherry blossoms in full bloom, we couldn't have asked for a better view! The photo I attached was the view directly from our room, and we couldn't have asked for a better environment. Don't forget to ask for coupons to the local hot spring!

I stayed here for one night in February because I wanted to experience the old fashioned side of Shirakawa in the Winter. The town was great and covered in snow and Nodaniya was just as great. Nodaniya is convenient located in the center but not in the tourist routs so it does not get loud or crowded. The rooms are spacious. Not everything in it is old and traditional (the decoration) but looks nice overall. It gets really cold in the winter, but the heater helps out. The futon for the night is also perfect. But the highlight is definitely the food. Dinner and breakfast were just the best. Totally fresh and delicious and very nicely arranged. With my moderate Japanese skills it was also pleasant to chat with other quest in the dinning room and the owner is also more then talk active and helpful. I would recommend the place to everyone who is interested.

Room was very homey traditional Japanese style with cozy Futon. It's still quite chilly at night in April but the air heater will do the warm up just nicely. Dinner was served in traditional Japanese fashion as well, dining with all other guests on the tatami in the same dining room. Food was delectable. Just wonderful. Dinner and breakfast were also plentiful and delicious, sampling local fish and mountain vegetables. we really appreciate the stay in this ryokan which gave us the memorable experience and made our trip a highlight. Everything is good here and worth the price, delicious food (I love the Hida beef), clean shared toilet, bathroom, nice granny always with smile on her face. The house and the entire village to us is a fairy tale world.

we arrived at this lovely little minshuku on a snowy day way before the check in time. no one was at the minshuku, as we decided to leave out luggage at the porch of the minshuku, the kind host came in and took care of our luggage. she was kind enough to look for extra pairs of rainboots to lend us. we couldn't have survive walking around the snow covered shirakawago without those rainboots! we were back in time for dinner after visiting the Outdoor Museum Gassho Folk Museum. it was freezing cold outside and we were so happy that warm food was ready for us. as we were having our sumptuous dinner, the host prepared futons for us. it snowed throughout the night we were there. we were woken up by the smell of breakfast the next morning. as we were checking out, the snow was already knee deep. the host had kindly agreed to fetch our luggage with 1 of us to the bus boarding area. it would have been treacherous to be dragging luggage through knee deep snow~~~ overall experience was fantastic and we really appreciate the kindness of the host~

Everything about this place was excellent. The staff was super friendly, the meals were fantastic, and everything was very clean. Location is great as it is close to the suspension bridge to the bus stop.

Highly recommended to all first timers to this ryokan. The host was very nice. Was there during winter, it was beautiful. Excellent breakfast and dinner prepared by the host. One of the nearest ryokan after crossing the bridge. If you are arriving after 6pm during winter, do remember to bring a torch. A must do to spend a night here :)

This humble ryokan was a surprising delight for my boyfriend and my stay in Shirakawa-go this past December. Needless to say, it was a freezing cold time for a visit but don't let that deter you from visiting. BEAUTIFUL snowy views you can't get in the summer time (like a painting) What was great was how accommodating the host was and the ryokan was sooo warm..better than some AirBnB places I stayed. Heated mat underneath the floor bed, nice hot tea, and a heater in the room...JOY!! The food was the best I've had in my entire cross-country trip in Japan. Traditional prefecture foods like Hida beef and miso dishes with fresh vegetables. If you can't decide where to stay, just believe all the other rave reviews and stay in this ryokan!

Visited in December when the snow was pouring down and it was super cold. However, don't let that deter you from visiting during the Winter. This is probably one of the most picturesque and serene time you can visit. The landscape looks like it popped out of a painting. As freezing cold as it was, our host made the stay incredibly comfortable. I was fearfully expecting to sleep in five layers, and proudly telling myself it was all for the experience! However, this ryokan is warmer than many of the AirBnBs I stayed at. There was a heated throw lied under our floor beds, hot tea, and a large portable in-room heater to keep the room nice and cozy. I felt so at home. Except the sliding doors are thin and you share the hall of bedrooms with other guests but everyone kept to themselves so I felt like there was enough privacy. The food is excellent, and likely the best food I've had in my entire cross-country trip throughout Japan. She includes local specialty like fresh mountain vegetables, hida beef (nothing like they make in the restaurants in Takayama .. extremely tender and flavorful!), special miso, tempura, all the delicacies. The bathroom is very clean and because there are shower times (no morning showers FYI) throughout the night, you won't really get caught in a pickle showering with someone else. There's a lock too so don't fret. Sinks and toilets are separately from the bath which makes it hassle-free to share with other guests. Final notes: in the winter, apparently there are bears at night so the host recommends not leaving the house during the night or early morning to keep noise level to a minimum. Take a picture with the host before you leave for nostalgia. Stay here!
