Wonderful guest house with great staff and located in a really nice town. The food was excellent and the hospitality as well. It's an old building, so you can definitely hear doors sliding and people walking, but as long as you bring earplugs it's fine.

I stayed here for 2 nights during the typhoon, and the service was great. The food in the evening and morning was delicious and they always kept us updated on any safety announcements, which were only in Japanese.

We stayed one night at Magomechaya as a family of four. The rooms and bathrooms were fairly basic, but the beds (which we made ourselves) were comfortable and the bedding clean. The best things about this place were its central location, the very kind staff who went out of their way to accommodate our vegetarian daughter, and the delicious food served in the dining room.

Ideally located. We were warmly greeted by the friendly tenant who spoke English perfectly. Authentic minshuku stay despite the fact there are many guest rooms. Excellent food served in a small room right across from the building where we were staying. Because we stayed two nights our host even did a small variation on dinner to make us discover other local delicacies, which was very appreciated though we wouldn't have minded to eat the same meal twice because it was so delicious. We had the room at the end of the hallway and it was much more spacious than expected. Only downside : there is a small bathtub in the shower-room which can serve as an onsen, but there is no actual onsen there.

This Minshuku requires a walk uphill, but is "on the walk itself". An older property with basic facilities - from room, to shared bathroom and steep stairs and corridors. Adequate but not luxurious. The meals are taken in another building across the Nakasendo trail! The host, a Filipino lady was helpful and ever smiling! Most pleasant!

Unfortunately, our one night stay at this guest house coincided with a typhoon, so we were confined to the building for most of our time. However, the building is very pleasant and traditional, and really gave us a warm traditional vibe that we were seeking. It is very clean and calm, and has everything you'd expect from a minshuku. Aware that we were staying at one of the cheaper options, we did not have any particular expectations about dinner but it was actually terrific! We were given a wide spread of delightful and sometimes unusual items, and it was a great experience. Admittedly, I have nothing to compare it to, but nonetheless, I enjoyed my stay very much and would not hesitate to book again.

A quiet and beautiful village, and a nice well located place to stay. The room was large enough, simple but clean. And the meal was really excellent. The only disappointing point was that going to have a shower after everybody, I didn't find any clean towel and there was no one from the staff to ask a new one.

A very warm welcome (in English) from the Philippines sister-in-law of the owner. I had walked the delightful walk from Tsumago. Magomechaya is right in the middle of the pictoresque village. Lovely meals (dinner and breakfast) are served at their dining room across the road - "outdoor" slippers are available, a nice touch.

Food is delicious and plentiful but served in a "restaurant" across the read. Staff are pleasant and helpful but seemed rushed because of numbers. Rooms small and basic with the atmosphere sort of lacking for a ryokan type stay as the feeling is of a hostel vibe.

The minshuku was well-run, perhaps a tad impersonable and business-like. I guess because there are many rooms added to that backpackers feeling. But the size of room was great. If there are many guests booked in, the wait for the bathroom might be a bit inconvenient. But otherwise, the lady proprietor is friendly and it helps that she speaks English, so she could explain the dishes to us, because at other places, we have to taste and guess what we are eating. Dinner was excellent, so was breakfast, and guests had meals in a comfy house across the road. First time trying sashimi horsemeat - go for it! Location is great, right in the centre of the old street.

We came by bus and the village is just beautiful. Stayed for only one night (not even 24 hours), but it's a nice quiet area. The staff was super friendly, helping us plan the next day and the food (both dinner and breakfast) was excellent. We walked to the next town on the following day. The tourist center , next to the Ryokan, can take your luggage to the next tourist center for you to pick up. Worked just fine. Overall, everything was as expected, no surprises.

The guesthouse is located half way Mogome and it is 10 minutes walk up the Hill from the bus stop. The hostess Jane really made the difference during our stay. The speaks perfect English and helped us with all our inquiries. The rooms are very basic, the futon matrasses are very thin and the light in the room is not so cosy but everything is clean. The warm water baths are available from 16.00 to 22.30 and not all day as the website mentions. But the showers and the bath are a real threat after a day of walking. The Food is also really good. You can spend your evening in the lounge but the atmospere is not that inviting. There is also a little kitchen where you can make yourself Some tea or you can buy Some cold drinks from the vending machine. If they are able to add Some more atmosphere and replace the futon beds it would be a 5!

Coming into the valley by bus was amazing, just beautiful and the town of Magome was like the postcards. Our stay at the guesthouse had some highs and lows. It was a haul from the bus stop to the guesthouse, we were tired and it was up and up but once found OK. The host speaks perfect English, so if that is helpful for you.. I really enjoyed the two open spaces on the first floor and although we didn't use it, they have a full small kitchen with everything you need to cook and eat. Perfect for those on a budget, special diets or come in late. Our dinner and breakfast were fantastic and we had eaten guesthouse - ryokan food many times on our 3-week trip. The downside is the place is in need of both upgrades and serious cleaning. Old pink 70's fixtures in the bathrooms, and our room was very small, stuffy and worse, that night, swarming with bugs. Crawling and flying it took us a while to kill and shoo them all out. It was a tough night of sleep. The town is a great starting place to walk the 7.8 km to the next town and the tourist center can take your luggage to the next tourist center for you to pick up. I like several things about this guesthouse but for the price I would look around before booking again. Still we met nice people, enjoyed dinner and breakfast very much and beers from the machine in the common room. It's all in what you're looking for.

It is a very good minshuku. The staff is very helpful and can speak english for the ones who need. Meals are great too. The region is worth the visit, it is lovely. Anyway I would recommand not to book via this website, I was really disappointed by the service of japaneseguesthouses.com which booked me a room without dinner plan without noticing me at first for my agreement (note that there is lo restaurant in the village so plan on eating at your guesthouse or prepare your own meal). Fortunately enough the minjuku staff was nice and change it for me.

Make sure you either book dinner and breakfast or buy something simple you can prepare in their small kitchen as nothing is open in the town after 5pm and before 9am.

A basic but very nice place, considering they are all basic in terms of rooms and facilities. Friendly and helpful service from the girl working there. Her English was great (she is from the Filipines) and she is very easy to talk to and helpful. Nice location, a few meters form the tourist office and half way down/up the main street. The food was reallym really good -included with my booking, and in the restaurant just across the street. I would come back to this place if I were to go back to Magome.

Stayed here for only one night (not even a full 24 hours), but it's a great little area. The staff was super nice, and the food (both dinner and breakfast) were great. The room was spacious and comfortable, if a bit sparce. Many of the guests were non-Japanese, probably because of their excellent English ability. There is parking onsite, which I wish I had known before hand, since it's a bit of a hike up a steep hill to the ryokan.

My wife and I spent the previous night at Matsushiroya in Tsumago and made our way to Magome to spend the next night. Perhaps this influenced our experience, but Magomemechaya felt more like a backpackers than a minshuku. Our host was nice and the venue was clean and presentable. Despite arriving early to check-in, we must have given the impression that we weren't punctual, as our host insisted twice that dinner was "at 6pm sharp, so be here on-time". The rooms were lined up like dorms with names scribbled above the doors on paper. We had to make our own bed. The rooms were monastic, with naught but a TV and coffee table (no rubbish bin, no tissues). There was a sign in the room saying 'strictly no eating or drinking'. The bathrooms had cakes of dirty old soap to use, the toilet roll holder had a empty roll on it (in both the men's and women's). This was the same the next day. The saving grace of this place was that the meals were excellent; despite being served in a 'restaurant' across the street which resembled a high school dining hall. This may all sound snobbish, but when you pay this much for accommodation in a traditional setting, also when you can pay the same for a beautiful place in Tsumago for a magical expetience, I wouldn't recommend staying here. It was disappointing.
