Welcome to Kayotei. This Luxurious Ryokan has 10 Sukiya suites that are arranged in the traditional style of a tea ceremony pavilion. The Kayotei mixes antique tansu chests of drawers, low-polished oak tables, hand-painted screens, traditional ceramic pieces and modern sculptural designs. There are two indoor communal baths sourced from natural hot springs. The baths are splendidly glassed in on three sides, providing guests with onsen views of natural forest sceneries. Traditional Japanese-style cuisine is served to the guests.

Our family of five stayed for three nights at Kayotei; our rooms, the baths and the entire building were beautiful. This is a fantastic traditional Onsen. We had our breakfast and dinners at Kayotei, the service and traditional meals were delicate, well presented and exciting. The local town is small, quiet and charming. We enjoyed walking to many small shrines and temples in the area. We went to Katano beach one day and had a great time body surfing in the waves. Overall the people, service, meals and facilities were amazing. As Americans on our first trip to Japan; Kayotei provided a wonderful opportunity to experience a wonderful traditional Ryokan.

I have now stayed in the Kayotei twice, once last month and the first time about five years ago, this time in winter, the last time in summer. It's one of my favorite places in all of Japan, and one of my very favorite ryokans. The design and decor are exquisite, the food is excellent, the baths are beautiful, and the staff unfailingly friendly and helpful and charming. The town of Yamanaka is tiny and full of charm, the gorge on which the ryokan sits is very beautiful and perfect for walks along the river (at least in summer), and there's a great sake bar in town that the manager will tell you about, with only five seats, run by one of the greatest sake sommeliers in Japan. This is a place I was reluctant to leave, both times. It's really a joy to stay here.
