I've read the other guests' reviews and I think my experience has been quite different from theirs, because we went in December, when there were very few guests in Fukuchi-in. My daughter and I had the onsen all for ourselves and it was great. There was no noise at all. The morning prayer was silent and all guests were respectful. I did wear the Japanese dress they gave me, because I was misled by the staff, and the monk told me I should change it (that was a night dress, apparently), but fortunately it was winter and I was dressed underneath, so it was no big deal. I've seen that another guests have had the same problem (one in the review and another at the same time I was there), therefore I think the instructions should be made more clear, maybe written up in the room. Overall, it has been a wonderful experience, and I strongly recommend it, especially in the winter. Consider it is very cold, however. I enjoyed eating traditional food, but I must express the truth: I did not like it at all, although I love Japanese food.

I had an amazing experience staying at this ryokan with a friend from home. We both thought the place looked great, it was peaceful, the onsen was very relaxing, with indoor and outdoor options available. The room was very comfortable and the view over the garden beautiful. The morning ceremony was quite interesting to watch. The food itself was absolutely fantastic, one of the best meals I have had to date in Japan, and I've lived here for a year now. The service was very good, better than I expected to be honest; I thought being a temple first and ryokan second it would be lacking, but I was very wrong. I'd highly recommend a stay here to anyone visiting Koyasan.

This was a great break from Japans larger cities, as this was a quiet and beautiful place. They have several hot springs including a carbonated bath, where the temperature is lower than that of a typical onsen (still hot though), which was very enjoyable since I often find onsens to be too hot. The morning cermony was fine, except for all the other guests that seemed bored after 5 minutes and had trouble being completely quiet. The food was served in our room and was really delicious.

Journey to get here is a lovely experience exposing you to lovely sights and the quietness and quaintness once you arrive. This particular temple I think is a larger one than others. It’s wonderful and wonderfully kept. But as it’s big it can host large groups, and that can get noisy, depending on nationalities i’d add. It also means the hot springs which accommodate a couple of persons can get crowded as well as noisy. The place itself has different areas where you can sit and chill or read but unfortunately there was a large group when I was there, who congregated in the main area and held multiple loud conversations for quite a while in the evening which disturbed tranquility. If you’re there only for 1 night it’s unfortunate. The helpers were very nice and polite but on the clock given they had a large group to cater for and as I read elsewhere you really only see the moms and remember you’re in a temple at the 6am morn prayers. However a visit to thus area is recommended, literally going up the mountain away from the neon buzz, stark interesting contrast to experience in this great country.

I enjoyed my stay here. It is classified as temple lodging and there is a temple but it is more like a ryokan. It is a very nice ryokan though. The gardens were beautiful, nice raked gravel and there was a koi pond. The staff was polite and helpful but it is a large ryokan and they may be helping other guests. (I wouldn't expect to be served by monks and I'm not sure if I saw any. Also if you want to go to morning prayers you need to be dressed properly, you can't go in your yukata like I mistakenly did and thus wasn't able to participate.) They have an interesting "mini museum" with some samurai armour and other curios. The vegetarian food was good, yes there is a lot of tofu but it is a kind of Japanese food you don't get many opportunities to try. The hot spring baths were very nice. I liked the outdoor wooden baths and the carbonated bath. There is a curfew (of 9 pm if I remember correctly) so you'll have to be in by then or be locked out! I was still able to take a nighttime walk in the oku-in cemetery, one of my favorite experiences of my trip and if you go koya-san I recommend going to the cemetery both during the day and night if you can. For me it was a little expensive, but worth it. I would recommend fukuchi-in and would stay there again.

Everyone visiting Japan should experience an overnight stay at this amazing temple. We had a really great stay and Fukuchi-in was perfect. Nice people, great food and the atmosphere was as comfortable as we had hoped. I really recomend to take a walk to the okunoin cemetery while you are there - that was great.

Although it rained all the time during our two day stay, it was definitely one of the best experiences of our trip to Japan. Delicious and healthy food, nice staff and a onsen!

Fukuchi-in was just wonderful. The temple was beautiful and really peaceful considering how large it is. Food was some of tastiest and healthiest we've ever had. The onsen baths were unbelievably relaxing, both indoors and outoors. I probably spent 6-8 hours in there with a book, just letting the warmth cover me like a blanket. Morning prayers were also a very interesting and calming experience. Highly recommended to those looking for inner peace and tranquility.

Although I did not expect for this to be a 'spiritual experience' I did expect it to be a bit less of the tourist racket that it was. Given the size of this inn on some level I understand why the nature of how they function is necessary. For instance, the front desk and all admitting personnel are wearing headsets to communicate with one another. On first arrival it does just feel a bit disarming. The inn is beautiful and they do have an onsen which is not offered at other inns in town. But if you are looking for a quaint experience I would try to book at an inn with a lot less rooms. Which might mean booking fairly early. As far as the food, I have to say I was disappointed. It looked pretty but it was basically tofu served in a myriad of ways. I like tofu. But not so much tofu. And I personally expected a lot more vegetables.

Getting to this place was a lot easier than anticipated, although can be long depending where you're coming from. Koyan-san is gorgeous secluded mountain speckled with temples. Okunoin cemetery is a place that is unforgettable. Fukuchiin was very hospitable and the food was incredible considering it's all vegetarian! The morning ritual at 6am is also something not to miss for its authenticity. Overall very good experience.

Sakura was in full bloom, later than in most of Japan. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location unbelievable, the vegetarian food - special but super good. Monks chanting at 6 am. I really hope to come back one day to Koyasan, a spiritual place.

Beautiful location for pending 2 days as guest in a traditional Japanese environment. We enjoyed every second spent in the old building with traditional rooms, excellent vegetarian food and tea, and with the several traditional hot baths in and outside. The service is very polite and English is spoken well. We've joined the morning meditation at 6h which ended in the unforgettable stone garden. Great experience!

Great place to visit. We enjoyed the train journey from Osaka, appreciated the visit at the Kongobu-ji and were very much impressed in particular by the Toro-do and the cemetery around it. The stay at the Fukuchi-in was quite enjoyable even though the room was small but this was pretty much expected in a temple. The food was great in particular what was cooked in soya milk.

I had a wonderful time staying at this ryokan- staff were friendly, the room was warm and quiet, and the food was great. There were other tourists there but they didn't bother me at all. The onsen and the rock gardens are beautiful and I wish I had stayed here longer. I was staying here by myself and I felt very welcome. It is also an easy location, getting on and off the bus, and walking to the various sites around town. Highly recommend staying here.
