The gracious hosts, the lovely smell of the tatami mats in the bedroom, the fantastic common bath, and, above all, the tasty and the elaborate meals — everything about my stay was delightful. I look forward to visiting again.

Sunshine and colorful autumn trees welcomed us to Kamikochi. We felt like we won the lottery when we stepped into our spacious room with nature right outside our sliding glass balcony door. After a walk in the sunshine, we returned to a steamy public bath with a silhouette of the alps. Later, sitting at our private table for dinner, we were delighted with the kaiseki dinner made with a wide variety of local ingredients. The dinners could easily have been worth 8000 yen per person; not only beautifully presented, but fresh flavors that complimented the subsequent dish and brought smiles to our faces. Breakfasts were also outstanding; varied and filling. Given the quality of the meals, the overall price to stay at Nishi Itoyo Sanso was a good value. We consider our stay most memorable and wish our Japan experience will stay in our hearts for a very long time.

I had a wonderful 2 nights stay at this Ryokan. I booked a room with a private toilet and it was more than adequate for my needs. I had a view of the alps on the left of my balcony and the river on the right. It was very pleasant to leave the balcony open and hear the river rushing by. The communal bath is large, spacious and has a great view of the alps. The food here is fantastic; there were no repeats on the 2 days I stayed. The staff however are the real winners of this inn. They were all warm and friendly and beyond reproach. I would choose this inn again in a heartbeat if I were ever to return. I absolutely enjoyed my stay here.

We stayed in a room with a private toilet with a shared bath, and the rates included breakfast and dinner. It was about 10 minutes walk from the Kamikochi bus terminal, across the kappabashi bridge. We were blown away by the beautiful scenery of the area. When we approached the lodge, we were greated by staff very warmly, who kept our bags until we could check in. When we did check in, the room was very spacious and comfortable, with table and chairs. It looked like it had been renovated. It had a balcony and view across the river. While we had dinner outside our room, the futon was laid out for us and ready by the time we returned. We initially thought the cost of staying was expensive but we were just blown away by the kaiseki dinner and outstanding breakfast. The dinner itself could easily have been worth 6000-7000 yen per person. There was a huge variety of dishes using local ingredients and it was so tasty filling. Breakfast was also very filling. Given the quality of the meals, it is good value for money. We would definitely stay again if we visit the area again.

We stayed for 2 nights in a room with a private toilet ( similar to the one in the site photos) It was a large warm room with a lovely view over the river. The lovely large communal indoor hot bath had large opening windows with a view of the mountains behind the lodge. I enjoyed the picture/map on the wall in the bath naming all the peaks. The staff were all friendly and helpful and most spoke excellent english. There were a lot of other foreign travellers staying - so they cater to this market well. It is in a beautiful setting. Highly recommend.

First of all I highly recommend Kamikochi above everything! I went by myself and the weather was beautiful, location perfect, and I loved that there were practically no other westerners around besides me (all Japanese!). I felt totally safe staying at this Ryokan and in Kamikochi. The Ryokan has a nice cafe that serves cake, tea, etc. when meals aren't being served. Be prepared for the traditional Ryokan experience (i.e. sleeping on the floor without exageration). It was fine for one night, but the second night I was struggling a little. Either way i wish I had spent not 2 but 3 nights in Kamikochi because the place is so beautiful. Back to the Ryokan - it is clean, the people are all so friendly! While I was there I interacted with the same 2-3 men (who somehow seemed related to me) and they were all very kind and helpful. There is good wifi and a computer in case you need it. The meals were very good too. It was my first time staying in a Ryokan and I absolutely loved it. The Ryokan is just a few minutes walk from the bus station and in the center of all the little town and all the different paths. There are monkeys that can be found on some of the trails, and in the afternoon of my second night I actually heard a monkey outside my window walking through the trees / bushes eating! That was super cool. The views from the room are also great.

Kamikochi is beautifully set in the Japanese Alps. The ryokan is situated on the riverside, although you only hear the water flowing when you open the Windows to the balcony. The room is very spacious, the food very good, the bathroom facilities large and good. The communal bathroom has stunning views on the Alps which helps to relax even more. Tha staff very helpful, the free coffee good and there is a nice shop with souvenirs. Note that the town has no opportunities to withdraw money, of course in the ryokan you can pay with your card, so bring it with you. we have made very nice hikings. On our last day there was a monkey passing by.
