Welcome to Kurama Onsen. Located in rural Kyoto, this Modern Ryokan is located within a beautiful river ravine. The train ride to Kurama Onsen is wonderful, and the setting of the ryokan within the tall dark cedar trees will make you quickly forget the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Kyoto. There are both indoor and outdoor shared hot spring baths for women and men (same gender only). The outdoor hot spring bath hours are from 7:30 am to 21:00, and the indoor hot spring bath hours are from 7:30 am to 23:00. Kurama Onsen has traditional Japanese style rooms, and guests can dine on fine Kyoto style seasonal cuisine or explore the nearby hiking trails that lead to Kibune Shrine and Kurama Temple.

Please note that Kurama Onsen does not accept guests with tattoos, so if you have a tattoo unfortunately you cannot stay in this ryokan.

I visited with my mother in Dec 2014, and this is definitely the highlight of my entire vacation! The entire area is very peaceful, with clean facilities and an amazing view in the outdoor hot spring. The outdoor hot spring experience would really not be complete without the cold that we had to run through from the outdoor hot spring to the main building after our soak. The dinner and breakfast are truly a feast, and the food just kept coming! Every time we thought that was the last course, it wasn't. The whole experience was relaxing and utterly comfortable, and we will definitely be back.

My girlfriend and I stayed for one night at Kurama Onsen in May 2014, following 3 nights in downtown Kyoto. My initial impressions were that the setting of the Onsen was very peaceful, but that the facilities were a little old and in need of some rejuvenation. After entering the main building, and being led to our room by the welcoming staff, I felt more at ease and there began a wonderful one night stay. Traditional Japanese hospitality of welcoming tea was soon followed by a trip to the outdoor and indoor spas. Before long we returned to our room for a truly wonderful 10+ course traditional Japanese dinner. Sleeping on floor mats wasn't the most comfortable, but was fitting. An early morning rise meant more time for the outdoor onsen, followed by a more simple but delicious Japanese breakfast. One night was ample time for us, as we were keen to continue on our hikes and to return to the cities.

We have just returned from our 3rd visit to Kurama Onsen this time for 3 nights. While we were there we spoke with a couple of Americans who were enjoying their 5th visit. We return to Kurama Onsen to hear the stream rush by our room, to enjoy the outdoor baths, to hike in the hills from Kurama to Kibune and enjoy the thrill of riding 30 minutes down to Kyoto and back on the charming and atmospheric narrow gauge Eisen railway. The short distance from downtown Kyoto makes all the difference to a slower way to experience Kyoto. Warm hospitality, delicious Japanese cuisine, and the friendly driver from the inn who greets us every time we step off the train are part of the experience "regulars" look forward to with great anticipation. gg, Mosman, NSW, Australia

It's been two months since our amazing visit to Kurama Onsen, but it's still such a strong memory for me. I was in two minds about whether to splurge on staying at the ryokan rather than just visiting for a hot springs bath, and I'm so glad we did. When we arrived on the train from Kyoto there was someone waiting at the train station for us. It seems like they send someone down whenever the train arrives just in case, because I don't remember telling them when we were going to arrive. This was the start of the incredible service we received at Kurama Onsen! The staff were very helpful and spoke perfectly good English, though they were very humble and kept apologising for not having better English. There was never a problem communicating. We had a hot springs bath straight away - and it was an experience I won't forget in a hurry! We visited during the tail-end of winter so it was extremely exhilarating to get into the hot water after walking through the cold, naked! We had a meal fit for a king that evening, served in our room. I couldn't believe how many courses came. It was all prepared with such care and attention, we felt like royalty. We had an early night and then... our favourite part of the trip, a hot springs bath first thing in the morning. It is an incredible way to start the day. And we had the (seperate) onsens to ourselves! Was so peaceful and beautiful and words can't do it justice. After another epic breakfast we were off... but we promise to come back!
