Takayama was the biggest of the places in the country side we visited. We stayed tree nights, which was enough, with two nights its ok too. The hotel itself is quite up so you have a beautiful view of the city, but being so high means its a little far and not easy to walk from the city. The hotel provides free rides between a time range. From the outside and the common areas , doesn't look like a ryokan, but, the rooms do. They are spacious, clean, traditional and with private bathroom and toilet. It has private and public Onsen. We only went to the private because we're not confortable being complete naked in front of strangers, so, having the private option was great. We didn't like the food, but, because we don't like in general traditional japanese food, so we ate in the city 2 of the 3 dinners we had. The same with the breakfast. The staff could speak a little more english. And the manual of the room, could be written in english too, so we could understand something.

Best place we stayed in all of our Japan trip

If you're looking for a place to relax and enjoy amazing food, you should stay here. We visited in December when most of the Ryokan was empty, so it felt very private, quiet, and relaxing. There were public and private onsen baths, both indoor and outdoor. You can reserve any of their five private baths at the front desk. Since we were there on the off season, we were able to reserve a different private bath every day, plus even the public baths were quite private. They also have a relaxation room with several different kinds of massage chairs, plus massage services available (though they were too expensive for us). The food was amazing! Dinner was different each night, with a set menu written in Japanese and English so we could read what we were eating. The staff were all friendly, and one woman even taught me some Japanese each time she brought a new dish to the table. The Ryokan is located a bit up the mountain, but it's fairly easy to walk to or from town in about 15 minutes if you don't mind walking up a slight incline. Takayama is kind of a quiet town in December, but that made it a great place for a tranquil getaway.
