I've stayed at a half-dozen onsen ryokan over some 49 years, and this was my favorite. The grounds are gorgeous; it's splendidly isolated; the meals were scrumptious; perhaps the only wee disappointment was the baths themselves, which were simply good but not brilliant. Yunoshima also provided good value.

I had an incredible stay here. I stayed in a traditional Japanese room and found it comfortable, spacious and the bathroom was amazing. The food is excellent, the service is excellent, and the hotel is mysterious, beautiful, and an adventure in it's own right because it's an usual design on the side of some hills. The onsen (hot springs) are fantastic, relaxing, and quite nice. The little spa things like the French Bed massage table are just added bonus. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

Worst Cold, Dirty, Japanese Experience Of My Life

My husband and I have stayed in several ryokans in our travels through Japan so we were looking forward to this stay over New Year's 2014-2015. We payed an outrageous 75,000yen per night to have a room with a 'private family outdoor bath'. Everything except for the kaiseki dinner and breakfast were incredibly disappointing. (1) We were in the old portion of the hotel which was dirty, crumbling and incredibly cold. There were cracks in the walls in our room and only the sitting area had a heater so the bathroom was nearly as cold as the outside which was less than 0 degrees. (2) the 'private bath' was more of a foot bath - less than 2 feet deep and too small for anyone but a child to sit in. There's no way it was usable in the cold. (3) the private family baths in the hotel were disgusting. they looked like something I would expect to see in a prison. They were the grossest thing I have ever seen in Japan. (4) there is absolutely nothing to do during the day. none of the baths are open until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon and breakfast is only served until 9am so there are hours to kill with nothing to do. The billiards and ping pong rooms were so cold and unheated that even while wearing winter coats inside, it was too cold to stay in the rooms. (5) The food and our attendant were the only good things about our stay. It was amazing. Even so, we seriously considered leaving after the first night and giving up what we paid to go back to Tokyo. We couldn't because of the holiday, so we had to stay. But I would never recommend or want to visit this ryokan again.
