It was the second time that we stayed at the Tsurugata ryokan. Very well located along the romantic channel. The warm historical centre of the city is plenty of nice shops and offers a few bars. The quality of ryokan itself is correct, the meals are good. But, the atmosphere is a little bit "rigid" in comparison with a lot of other hotels and ryokan!

Very impressive stay at Kurashiki

It was a really nice stay in Kurashiki. The town is beautiful and the location of the ryokan is fantastic. The stuff was very friendly, the room nice and the meals amazing. The only thing which was a little bit annoying, was the 11pm closing time of the ryokan. This reminded us a little bit on a school trip but maybe it's normal at a ryokan. A highlight was the shabu shabu dinner on the second night! All in all the stay was worth the cost, altough the japanese beds won't become my favorite way of sleeping.

Elegant ryokan, highly recommended

Located on the canal in what is essentially a quiet, car-free zone of the Bikan Historical Quarter, Tsurugata is a lovely traditional ryokan, perfectly situated for exploring the numerous nearby museums and shops. Though not 'cozy,' the building itself is beautifully appointed and elegant, the hot bath luxurious, and the staff extremely gracious and efficient. The multi-course dinner with a large array of delicious offerings was brought in stages to our room and was a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. As noted in other comments, Tsurugata does seem to present the traditional ryokan experience, and it is well-worth splurging a bit to stay there.

Travelling for a few days sightseeing on my own I stopped by Kurashiki and stayed at this lovely ryokan. I was not disappointed. It is in a magical location, right on the canal in the Bikan Historical Quarter. My room was generous and well-appointed. It did have a basin and toilet, but not its own shower and I had to use the public (women only) bath area which was not a problem as I seemed to be the only woman at the time. The Japanese meal that was served to my room was exquisite, all eight courses of it, served to me by a very obliging and friendly attendant. The breakfast served in the ryokan's restaurant was similarly delicious. In the evening when I went out for a walk I was handed a paper lantern to light my way through the streets, which was a very romantic touch. My only complaint is the very poor wifi coverage, which was not a problem for my short stay but might be of concern to those staying longer. Overall though I would recommend this ryokan as a very special and possibly quite authentic Japanese experience in a wonderful location.

Nested in the unique historical quarter, this Ryokan offers conformable rooms and a warm welcome. Food is fine, but better quality was expected for this price.
