Staying overnight here atop the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route is a great base for hiking or experiencing volcanic mountain scenery (otherwise the all-day transit is too rushed). The atmospheric mountain lodge of Tateyama Murodo Sanso has comfortable private Japanese style rooms, solid wood decor, and good quality Japanese food. Bathrooms down the hall are clean. Extra futons in each room can be piled for a softer bed. Room walls are a little thin, transmitting voices, but most people obey the quiet hours for sleep. Its buildings are conveniently placed further away from the sulfuric volcanic fumes than the bus station lodge (where prevailing winds tend to blow eye-irritating gases), so it usually escapes most of the bad air. Bringing large rolling luggage would be a struggle across the bumpy 1-kilometer path to the lodge (so we carried small backpacks). Instead, simply bring a change of clothes for 1 night and send large luggage ahead along the Alpine Route through inexpensive services.

We took less than 10 mins to walk to Murodo Sanso. We are blessed with amazing weather where 3 of us climbed Oyama summit (3003 m, the route started from next to the ryokan). We climbed at steady pace but still took us 3 hrs up and 2 hrs down with the rocky and slippery paths. The other 4 were enjoying the weather and the walk around Murodo. Too bad we missed the night sky of stars... As we already expect basic accommodation at this altitude, meal was good even though mostly fried food. Nothing compare to hot soup and hot tea. The bathroom is better than I expected , equipped with proper bathing facilities. please bring your own amenities.

We were delighted to arrive at Tateyama in brilliant sunshine, after several very wet dull days. The autumn colours were at their best and better still there had been a fresh snowfall at Murodo, making it a wonderful sight. After trudging through the snow from the station we were warmly welcomed to Murodo Sanso. The room was basic Japanese style room, meaning no furniture to relax on, but we were expecting that. Having the bathroom on a separate floor was an inconvenience, especially as we were expected to wear ill fitting slippers which were frankly quite dangerous, on the stairs. The bath was refreshing, but only a tiny hand towel was provided for drying. We were disappointed with the dinner which was provided as part of our booking, mass produced fried snacks and a very ordinary meal overall. Breakfast was sufficient at best, below the level of meal we had expected at the price. Service was rather sloppy, we were served by a chap in a filthy apron, he'd come straight from the kitchen. However the fairytale landscape made up for the misgivings of the accommodation. If i was ever lucky enough to travel to Murodo again, I would look elsewhere for accommodation.

It's not a good weather on 9 Nov 2014 but we've booked Murodo Sanso and planned, so still go on. raining whole day in tateyama. rain and snow in Murodo, the visibility is very low and strong cold wind in the peak. we started to walk to our Ryokan, normally just 20 mins walk to Murodo Sanso from Murodo Station. However, the bad weather make us difficult to get there, we spent around half hour to get there, it's a amazing experience for us. Low season in Novemember so almost zero check in, just 2 of us and one japanese elder. room price is included dinner and breakfast, but we are so hungry and no energy to go back to Murodo Station for lunch, we had lunch in Murodo Sanso, the beef bowl taste good and not expensive, just 800 yen. After a short break, we tried to go back to Murodo Station and want to go down to Daikanbo but it's a really bad weather so we declined to go and just stay in the Station to buy souvenirs and have a tea in Station Hotel. Actually nothing to do in the first day but wonderful time was next day morning. Weather is really really good! blue sky, no cloud, with white snow! wonderful view in Murodo, it's so quiet and silent. this is the gift for the visitors who stayed overnight in Murodo. If you just have a day trip, u cannot enjoy such magic moment. Room is big for us, near 10 tatamis size, can sleep 4-5 ppls i think. have a free wi-fi in our Tower. Shared toilet and have public shower and large bath. a little bit scared as no one share with me, just 1 girl in the big toilet and large bath. they have a Dried Room, you can leave your wet trousers, shoes, socks etc in the room and let it dry. It's worth to stay at least 1 night in Murodo, i will come again to enjoy such miracle moment.
