We spent 2 nights at Tanabe ryokan, this was our first experience of such japanese housing, and we will never forget it. The room is very spacious (much more space than in 'classical' hotels) and nicely arranged. Sleeping on a tatami was surprisingly comfortable. The food, served in the room, was delicious (12-13 small dishes per person) and a perfect example of japanese gastronomy. We also discovered the onsen. Even if staying in a ryoken is more expensive than in a hotel, it has to be experienced at least once if you go to Japan.

excellent atmosphere, extremely pleasant staff and fantastic food and abundant; the bathing facilities very nice but all bath tubs were at the same temperatura; we left a pair of glasses behind which the staff send to our hotel in Tokyo w/i 24h at no cost. very much appreciated. If we go back to Takayama no question we will stay at Tanabe Ryokan. It was a fantastic experience

We had an amazing time at Tanabe Ryokan. This is highly recommended for anyone wanting to experience a traditional tatami mat room and wonderful traditional Japanese meals. We were filled to the brim with all the food and it was soooo delicious! The hosts were also very gracious and were conversing with us. They were very helpful when we needed to procure transportation to the bus station. We also brought a 1 year old toddler with us who enjoyed herself very much walking around the place! WE didn't have time to try the Onsen, though. I'm sure it would have also been great! Would give it two thumbs up! :D

I stayed in this Ryokan as a solo traveler, and the staff couldn't have been more friendly. I had a large, beautiful room with a private bath, and the public baths are very gorgeous, with two open-air tubs in the women's baths (as well as a large indoor bath). The food and service were excellent. The location meant I could walk everywhere in the town (including to and from the train station/bus depot). The hallways are decorated with beautiful art and calligraphy. Absolutely recommended!

I stayed at Tanabe for 6 nights. I was travelling in Japan alone, and this was my last stopover of 3 while in Japan. Not sure what to say really, except that I was made to feel very welcome, all staff were pleasant, rooms were spacious and clean, and the Ryokan is well placed, only about 7 to 10 minutes from the train and bus stations. There was also no quibble when I asked to alter my stay from DB&B to B&B only. Tanabe is also good for restaurants, cafes and the morning market. I would not hesitate to recommend Tanabe Ryokan to future travellers.

We wanted to have the experience of staying in a ryokan as part of our three week trip to Japan. Tanabe Ryokan was a perfect choice. Upon arrival we were shown to our room and served tea and a sweet as we recovered from the trip from Tokyo. We had a family room that was extremely comfortable for the four of us. The meals were delicious and beautiful. And the on-site onsen was delightful. The staff was very helpful during our stay. They even kept our luggage for us overnight when we ventured out to Shirakawa-go for a day. I would recommend this ryokan highly to anyone making a trip to Takayama!

Tanabe was our first Ryokan experience in Japan. The room was immaculate and comfortable. By the time we left, Mrs Tanabe and Yuko felt like good friends. The staff taught us some details about how best to eat the lavish breakfast. The onsen was great and the morning market offered the loveliest fruit we had ever eaten! Takayama is a wonderful town and Tanabe is a great place to enjoy it from.

There is nothing much to complain about, with Ryokan Tanabe. The rooms are beautifully done up, the service is excellent and the food (dinner and breakfast served in the room) was delicious. Just little things here and there that could have made our stay more memorable. First, its location on a main street of Takayama is not that charming. Every time the glass doors slide open, a blast of icy cold air blows into the foyer, and that is not nice when it is -10 degrees outside. There is a nice traditional wood fire stove on a tatami dais near the front door, but it was not lit. Was it there just for decoration? The whole place feels very traditional Japanese, but the staff is mostly sitting behind the counter busy with their tasks. So there wasn't that feel of the traditional ryokan I have experienced in many other places in japan. The baths (alternating between men and women in the morning and evening) were a bit squeezy. And although there were outdoor baths to enjoy the snowy winter, the space was tight and not really comfortable. The streets of old Takayama and the riverside are really charming, but none of that really gets translated into Ryokan Tanabe.
