I had an extra day to plan on the way back to Tokyo from the Kyoto area, and decided to stop in Fujinomiya. Though I have climbed Fuji from Fuji Yoshida many times, I had not spent time on the south side. This was not a climbing expedition, just a luxury stop. Tachibana exceeded my expectations. I was worried about it being a bit ordinary, situated on the outskirts of a big town. But the reception was very cordial, the inside was lovely and had just the right amount of incense. And, of course, if Fuji is visible, as it was for us, then the experience is sublime. The beds in our room were Western, and meals were in a separate room at a Western table with chairs. The separate room allowed better views of Fuji, was private, and frankly I am of an age where sitting on the floor has lost a lot of its charm. And though I like futons, I did appreciate the beds. So, top marks here. And the food was fabulous and interesting. We were lucky with the outdoor bath, too. We had it for just the two of us both evening and morning, the latter with a view of the mountain. Really beautiful, and since we had it to ourselves I could take pictures, attached. We could also see the mountain from our room in the morning, looming above our colorful pool of carp. The only negative was the WiFi, which was the sort where you have to keep logging in repeatedly. We stopped in the town to see the lovely shrine, and to eat Fuji-themed yaki-soba. Had we more time we might have ventured to the waterfalls and ice cave. All in all a brilliant stop.
