My fiancé and I stayed at Shouenso for one night and we had a terrific time. This was our first onsen experience, so we weren't sure what to expect. To start, Shouenso is located just outside Kyoto, near Kameoke. The Ryokan offered a shuttle pickup from Kameoke station, so we had no problem getting there. The Ryokan itself is a very large, modern building. I believe there are around 55 rooms in total. We reserved a room with a private outside bath, which faced a lovely wooded hillside on the back side of the building. The Ryokan also offers group baths for both men and women, but we didn't spend any time there since we had our own private tub. Our room was spacious, and the sleeping mats were very comfortable. The small backyard area included our private tub with screens that we could lower and raise as we saw fit. For dinner, we were served a large kaiseki style meal in the restaurant downstairs, which included many dishes that we didn't get to try anywhere else during our travels. The breakfast seemed more traditional, but was still very large and included a variety of different dishes. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone looking to treat themselves to something special. The staff was gracious and very helpful, as we don't speak Japanese. I would return again in the future.

It was an amazing experience. This Ryokan is beautiful, we particularly liked the look of the futuristic concrete building from the outside. The staff are very friendly and accommodating to all your needs. The room was perfect and the garden was lovely, especially the private onsen! The traditional Kaiseki-ryori dinner was amazing also, it was a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. If we had a chance to stay there again we definitely would do.
