Welcome to Shiunso. Shiunso is a traditional ryokan. Located 5 minutes from Hakone-yumoto station by bus or Tonosawa station on foot. The very-big rock at the entrance is a famous symbol of HAKONE-TONOSAWA from the EDO-period, in front of which you have an appeasing view on the river and the bamboo hill, right next to the lobby. The staff will treat you with Hakone’s very best ingredients and Shiunso’s seasonal delicacies.

This was a lovely experience. From the time we arrived until our departure everything was perfect. The open air private onsen was special and the dinner and breakfast added to our pleasurable stay. My only regret; we should have stayed at the end of our trip to Hakone rather than the start.
  • Highly recommended ryokan with friendly staff and private onsen

We were visiting Hakone during the early part of Sakura season and needed somewhere convenient for sightseeing and also with access to traditional onsen and Japanese food. Shiunso was a short bus journey from the main Hakone train station (Hakone-Yumoto) but we realized once we got there it would have been easily walkable in about 15 minutes (without too much luggage). The bus stop outside can take you easily to many other parts of Hakone and I would recommend purchasing the Hakone-Pass, which makes travel to and around the area very straightforward. The staff at Shiunso were incredibly friendly and despite limited English language were able to offer us everything we required. There was a regular bath in the room but you have access to an amazing private indoor onsen for free and a private outdoor onsen you can hire for 50 mins for about 30GBP (very very highly recommend; one of our highlights of Japan). We were served in our room, which overlooked the river (see photos). If we'd understood Japanese we would've had a lot more insight into what we were eating but it was all good and very traditional. Overall, great visit.
