Stayed at Ryoan Kazuki for 2 nights after staying before in a very traditional ryokan. Kazuki is a multi-floor ryokan. Room was very comfortable with its own separate Japanese toilet (a pleasure). We had the kaiseki dinner for 2 nights and it had different choices each night; very delicious. Many choices for breakfast. Baths were communal (men separate from women) but many wash stations and 2 soaker pools. Great location near a subway stop. Beautiful Japanese garden/ walkway to enter the ryokan.

We had stayed in a Ryokan in the Gion area on a previous visit but this Ryokan is more centrally located. Most guests seemed Asian and though we tried both Japanese and Western breakfasts, even the western one was not what you would have expected. This is not a complaint as we'd rather have a more local experience. The man made hot spring baths were good but did not seem very well attended. As the bathroom in our room was so small we bathed in the hot springs each night as there was more room to move there. Our room did have a separate (wonderful) Japanese toilet. The futons were fine but when you get older bending down all the time can be a strain on the back and legs. There were no English channels that we could find on the TV. Internet was free and reliable. Front desk staff did not have good English and when we wanted to book a full day tour they would not do it for us. We walked to the nearby Hotel Monterey where the tour desk woman happily booked it for us.
