I have traveled from one end of Japan to the other and Nishimuraya Honkan is the onsen ryokan by which all others are measured. I prefer simple and am not one for overly fancy, but if it is within your means, Nishimuraya is worth the splurge. Like everywhere in Japan its class is defined by its service, for the staff are hands down the best I have encountered anywhere. The grounds and baths are exceptional and the ryokan itself feels like you are stepping backwards in time. If onsen are what you're craving, then Kinosaki cannot be missed, and Nishimuraya should be your first stop.
