Welcome to Hotel Tsuruya. This Traditional Ryokan was built along the scenic Nakasendo Highway during the Edo Period (1603-1868) and has approximately 400 years of history. Also, many famous writers have stayed at Hotel Tsuruya. There are 24 rooms in total, divided among three buildings called Honkan, Bekkan and Okukan (Okukan rooms are not available in the winter), 15 are Japanese style rooms, 6 are Western style rooms and 3 are mixed Japanese-Western style rooms. Of these, 22 of the guest rooms have private baths and toilets, and 2 have a private toilet only. There are two indoor baths, open 14:00-10:00 (same gender only). Traditional Japanese cuisine is served at Hotel Tsuruya. Check-in time is after 14:00, and check-out time is before 11:00. Parking is available.

  We stayed at Tsuruya last year in May and went back this year in April. Having stayed at many ryokan over several trips, I think that Tsuruya is a perfect combination of service and privacy, for us at least. They cater very well to foreigners, with good English (including English menus) and it seems to me that it would be an ideal place for people to have their first ryokan experience. The building itself is very nice though obviously getting on in years but the age gives it character. It is set at the top of the shopping street amongst a fair amount of gardens, and I think the position is quite ideal. There is a very nice Victorian style lounge on the ground floor with good baths (they don't switch so I didn't get to see the other ones). The rooms are very nice. We had the same room both years with views over a wooded area at the back and the sound of a creek running (or was that a drain? I wont spoil the illusion). The bathrooms are good, and the facilities are very nice. The food is very good. It isn't too much, though there is plenty of it. Breakfast is an excellent buffet. There is a coin laundry which is really useful and a beer dispensing drink machine next to it which I found very handy when I was doing may laundry. The price for two nights was very reasonable given the quality, I thought. Overall I'd rate it really highly, and recommend it.
