Welcome to the Daimaru Besso. This Traditional Ryokan was established in 1865. Daimaru Besso has 3 different buildings, the Taishotei a 2 story building, the Heiantei which has four stories and the Showatei that has only one floor. All the rooms in the Taishotei have a view on the Japanese garden; other rooms have a view on the Japanese nature. Daimaru Besso has 40 rooms, and all of them have their own private bathroom (not hot spring water in room). There are 2 family bathes that can be reserved for private use. Guests will be served meals in the dinning room. Daimaru Besso recommends you to try their four season Kaiseki for dinner.

Important Notice: Due to the latest news that Daimaru Besso failed to comply with the prefectural government’s ordinance regarding the maintenance of the Hot spring water in their facilities we have stopped accepting reservations for our guest in this facility.

This ryokan has been well maintained and with history. The Japanese Emperors have been here before and there is no doubt about its hospitality, given you understand the subtle and detailed preparation from Japanese or otherwise you'd miss the great things there. It is not an extravagant or lousy place but a quiet and mind searching experience. It's not a very big ryokan but it has a good set up of Japanese garden. If you have knowledge about Japanese gardening you would know how to appreciate (but sadly I don't. I felt that I have missed that part). The cuisine they have prepared is very good. Again, you have to appreciate the 'subtle luxury'. They have carefully chosen the best ingredients of the seasons. You should not expect a lot of crabs or sashimi because it is not luxury means. You're just given the best and would not have the excess of it. A brilliant experience!

The location on Google maps is wrong, instead use the location from their Facebook page. You must walk along the main road and the entrance to the guest house car park can be found directly to the side. Walk through the car park to reach the check-in. The people working here are very friendly, the rooms are idyllic and the food is really good. I especially enjoyed the beef which was far better than the Kobe beef I had in Kobe. The assortment of new things to try, like Fugu, was also really wonderful. The young staff who showed us to our room spoke English well and explained the facilities well. The people who served us breakfast and dinner spoke more limited English but were kind, patient and helpful. We had no trouble communicating with them with our extremely basic Japanese grammar and limited vocabulary. The sake with the meal, and drinks in our room, were a very reasonable price. At 10.30pm-11.30pm the male and female baths were empty. It was lovely to open the shutters, feel the cool breeze and smell the flowers while taking my bath. The baths were so beautiful, I felt like I was in the anime series Love Hina. I would love to come back. I strongly disagree with all negative reviews left about this guest house.
  • Not good value for the price you pay.

This Ryokan has staff who know little English. Very difficult to communicate with staff. The inside is a little tired and not good value for the price you pay. Very disappointing. Rooms are large but you don’t really need all that space. One person in our group was sick and not eating , we still had to pay for all meals. This was not the case in another Ryokan the night before. Would not stay again.

Truly the perfect place to experience a traditional Ryokan! The ryokan is situated on a busy road but you would not fathom that idea once you are inside. It's so peaceful, quiet and relaxing. The staff go above and beyond to make sure you are cared for and even though the staff has limited English they ensure that there is no language barrier. Absolutely impeccable service and the food was amazing and very traditional. The onsen and gardens were great as to the private onsen bath. The room is enormous and is set up with a western style sitting room, Japanese style sitting room that you have your meals served to and the sleeping area where you sleep on a futon that the staff set up for you. You will not regret staying at Damaru Besso - it's worth every yen spent!

We have just returned from a trip to Kyushu, where we stayed for 2 nights at Daimaru Besso. It's very easy to get to by car (we rented from outside Hakata station), and the facilities are excellent, with a very nice bath on the bottom floor. Food was served in our dining room each evening and was superb quality and served with great care, they also have some rather nice sake :) Our room was gigantic, with a western style sitting area, a Japanese style sitting room and a Japanese style sleeping room, with futon laid out at night. We also had a cedar tub in the bathroom which was really nice to relax in by the window.

We stayed in Daimaru Besso as the endcap to our honeymoon trip in Japan. One of my Japanese friends looked it up for us in advance to see the reviews and said she couldn't find a single bad review of the place even in Japanese! She was so right - we had an amazing time! We took the train from Fukuoka to Chikushino (about 30 minutes) and could find the ryokan easily. We had to cut our stay short by one evening (we needed to get off Kyushu for our flight home and a typhoon was coming). So we only stayed one night, but that one night was incredible! Most of the staff do not speak English, but a few do so there's no worry about communicating (we do not speak any Japanese). The place is beautiful - once you're inside you feel like you've stepped into a different world. It's quiet and peaceful, with a garden in the middle of the property complete with koi ponds and beautiful trees and flowers. We stayed in the Taishotei building so we had a view of the gardens from our windows. The service was impeccable, even by Japanese standards. The food was an unparalleled experience - we've never had a kaiseki meal so that in and of itself was lovely. The quality of the food was top-notch and prepared beautifully. We never got to experience the onsen on the property because we had to leave too quickly, but we had a private bath as a part of our rooms which was so relaxing. We would highly recommend this place to anybody staying in the Fukuoka area. There's nothing negative I could think to say about it!
