Welcome to Tenseien. This large Ryokan Hotel has 105 Japanese-style rooms. There are four shared indoor hot spring baths at Tenseien (same gender only) and most of them are open 24 hours a day. The two shared outdoor hot spring baths have a view of Tenseien's surrounding Japanese garden. The women's outdoor hot spring bath is open from 5:00am to 12:00 midnight while the men's outdoor hot spring bath is open 24 hours a day. Meals are buffet style. Important Travel Warning: It takes a long time to go through customs at Narita International Airport and then travel to Hakone. If your plane lands in the early morning at Narita International Airport, you can make it to a Hakone ryokan in time for dinner. However, if your plane arrives after 10:00am you WILL NOT be able to make it in time for dinner. You should stay at least 1 night in Tokyo and then go to Hakone the next day.

This was our second visit to Tenseien and we loved it even more than the first time. For us, this is the perfect holiday room: private terrace bath overlooking the garden, two bathrooms and separated seating and sleeping areas, it is luxurious and comfortable enough we might have spent the whole time there. Instead we made good use of the gender-separated baths, sauna, steam room and open-air terraces. We enjoyed them throughout the day and night and also appreciated the auto-massagers (chair, bed, hand and foot, some free, some very inexpensive) on the 4th floor. The meals were fine, but not the reason to go. The buffet is nearly identical every day so you would probably look elsewhere if you're looking for adventurous food exploration. I have celiac disease and suspect they were being overly-cautious when listing ingredients. I travel with my own soy sauce so ate well sticking to sushi and sashimi, but steered away from foods I would have enjoyed because they listed them as containing wheat (for example: miso soup, smoked salmon, salads). I'm nearly certain these would have been safe but wasn't going to chance it. Lastly, we love hiking around the town and taking the local train as it chugged along switchbacks up the mountain to the Hakone Museum.
