Hot springs have a very long history in Japan, and they are an intimate part of Japanese culture. There are over 3,000 "onsen" ,or hot springs, in Japan. Many can be found at the ryokans available on Japanese Guest Houses.

Welcome to Tanigawa Ryokan. This Modern Ryokan is located within Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, where the hot spring was discovered in the Edo Period (1603 - 1867). Tanigawa Ryokan has 35 Japanese-style rooms and hot spring baths. The baths are open 24 hours a day, and until 21:00 guests can drink sake in the hot springs. There are indoor and outdoor hot spring baths for both women and men (same gender only). There is also an outdoor hot spring which can be privately reserved in advance (please ask for details at the front desk during check-in). Local, fresh cuisine is served at Tanigawa Ryokan. Check-in time is after 14:00 and check-out time is before 10:00 am. Warning: Please bring enough cash before you get on the train and go to Tanigawa Ryokan. There are very few ATMs in this area.
