Welcome to Shunkoso. This Traditional Ryokan is one of the most economical ryokans of our Hakone ryokans. As a result, guests will find that Shunkoso is an older, run-down building in need of renovations here and there and it is located in a non-descript setting. However, the staff is very helpful and some English is spoken. There are 23 traditional Japanese-style rooms, all of which have private toilets and hot spring baths. Shared indoor and outdoor hot spring baths (same gender only) are also available at Shunkoso. The women's hot spring bath is made out of stone, and the men's hot spring bath has a view of the mountains. Shunkoso serves Japanese-style meals in the guest rooms. For the guest's dining pleasure, there is also a Japanese-style tea room and a Japanese noodle shop. Check-in time is after 15:00 and check-out time is before 10:00 am. Parking is available. Important Travel Warning: It takes a long time to go through customs at Narita International Airport and then travel to Hakone. If your plane lands in the early morning at Narita International Airport, you can make it to a Hakone ryokan in time for dinner. However, if your plane arrives after 10:00 am you WILL NOT be able to make it in time for dinner. You should stay at least 1 night in Tokyo and then go to Hakone the next day.

We are two couples. To start with the positives: The food served for breakfast and dinner was excellent and staff indeed friendly and helpful. We were informed from the website that the building was a bit in need of renovation. Indeed, this is the case but still the overall comfort is good and this was not a major issue (at least was not for us). We were extremely disappointed that there was no room cleaning/replenishment service at all, e.g. tea bags only on the first day. We had to look ourselves through the wardrobes in the hallways of the house to find some clean towels and yukatas. How could one be expected to spend three days in a ryokan with only one A-3 size towel per person ? We were equally disappointed that breakfast was not served in the room as the "traditional ryokan experience" offers and as we had expected. Overall, the accommodation and service offered is over-prized (we paid 20k JPY p.p. and night) for the quality and service delivered. Although, Japan is a quite expensive country there are much better deals at other locations that we have experienced during a couple of weeks of travel in Japan.
