We visited Gyozanen as a family of 6 ranging from 55 to 11 years old. The location is amazing - very near some lovely temples and beautiful woods and waterfall. It is about an hour from Kyoto so getting there was something that needed to be planned. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Only the manager speaks English but that wasn't really an issue. The accommodation and baths and gardens are lovely. I was particularly taken with the amazing massage chair. The Kaiseki meal was a real experience. I can't say I fully enjoyed the meal as it was full of many things I couldn't identify and hadn't experienced before and the lack of english in the servers meant there was very little explanation. But we did all love the experience. I really wish we could have afforded to stay for 2 nights though I wouldn't have wanted the Kaiseki for 2 nights. The breakfast was amazing and really beautiful. I felt we got a really amazing, authentic, enjoyable Japanese experience. Ps if you want to travel by taxi away from the inn plan well in advance as we had to wait ages for taxis to get back to Kyoto.

I stayed at Gyozanen for two nights towards the end of my busy vacation to Japan. The combination of the friendly staff, the comfortable room, the surrounding mountains and hiking trails, the traditional food and the three hot baths made for a very relaxing stay which allowed me to recharge my batteries. It is about a 70-minute bus ride out from Kyoto station, plus a walk uphill to the ryokan with your baggage, so be aware of that. However, I felt the slight inconvenience of this was nothing compared to being able to get away from the busy city and to experience a more 'traditional' lodging.
