Fantastic experience- in a great location in Tsumago and a beautiful well kept ryokan. Our family of 4 had a large lounge and 2 areas for sleeping so perfect. Mats were very comfortable and we slept well. The staff were very attentive and were great at explaining the different dishes for dinner. Dinner was a lovely experience with beautifully prepared food which was delicious too. We also enjoyed the hot tub

Firstly, Vincent from the Japaneseguesthouses.com was very helpful, sending us bus timetables and links to train timetables so that we could plan remotely from the UK. We found Fuijoto easily as it was clearly labelled in English and well known in Tsumago. The greeting we received was genuinely warm and friendly and all the helpers spoke excellent English. The service mentality was first class. We stayed two nights so they went out of their way to make sure we had a different meal on both nights and the quality of the food was first class. All courses were meticulously explained as to what they were and what order was recommended etc. A first class experience of a traditional Ryokan. We stayed in another later on for almost double the price and were disappointed as Fuijoto had set the bar so high in terms of food and service. The three of us were given a large room overlooking the lovely front garden, with our own small 'balcony' area. It was delightful, but as westerners, we struggled a bit with the futons and buckwheat pillows - a bit of extra padding would have a made a full 5-star experience!

We stayed one night and wish we could have stayed longer. It was our favourite accommodation of our trip. Wonderful hospitality, outstanding food, very clean, very friendly. We were very fortunate to get the best room (corner room over looking garden) and enjoyed just relaxing there. Two bathrooms available and lockable. Village is highly photogenic. If you are a light sleeper, do bring earplugs in case you are unfortunate enough to get a snoring neighbour like we did (the house and location is otherwise very quiet).

We just had one night here but would have liked to stay longer. It's just a short walk from the bus stop and we thought it was very easy to find. Very helpful management and staff and fantastic food even though some of it was out of our comfort zone(bee larvae). Our room was a good size with access to a small balcony overlooking the front garden, a very pleasant spot to have a beer at the end of the day.It was great to be able to have private use of the bath with your better half, it's a lot nicer having someone to talk to. The photo momento they give you at the end is a very nice touch. The only very minor negative is no ensuite facility.

The Ryokan would have scored ten out of ten, but I felt that the atmosphere in the dining room could be much nicer if the snow white light bulbs would be replaced with warm white light bulbs. I know that half of Japan is lit with TL tubes of a previous generation, very cold light, but more and more restaurants and public places have switched to more gentle lighting. It would require a very small investment to install more atmospheric light bulbs.

This is an amazing Ryokan, very friendly staff, it is great to find hot tea and cooking coming in everyday.. I would recommend it. The only negative thing I can say is that the pillows are too hard, oh well. Tsumago is beautiful!

Excellent stay, we struggled to find it as there was no romanji on the sign but once we were in the staff were so accommodating. The food was an experience, we ate some things I didn't even know were edible and they were really nice. Personally I am not a huge fan of sleeping on tatami mats and it was fairly cold when we visited however that is nothing that Fujioto could do anything about!! Great location for hiking to Magome from, I wish we had planned to spend more time here, we ended up in a big rush to try get to our next destination after spending too much time in all the great museums that surround the Ryokan before our hike. Take plenty of food and drink with you if you do the hike, we assumed there would be some kind of shop or vending machine along the way but the only one we found was out of order - thankfully the tea house half way along kept us going, just!

We had walked the trail from Magome in the rain and bumped into Franco right outside the Ryokan. We had pre-booked and he welcomed us in to his fabulous guesthouse. What a great place to stay, he had given us one of the best and largest rooms overlooking the gardens at the front with a small balcony to sit on with my beer later. My wife and I used the bath/hot-tub to warm up , it was heavenly after a damp walk. He was a wonderful host with great food , both dinner and an earlier prepared breakfast as we needed to leave fairly early.Service was in good english and both he and his wife contributed to one of the best overnight stays we had in our 15 days in Japan. I cannot say enough good things about this place, just wish we had booked 2 nights to spend more time in the village as it brightened up as we departed. This Ryokan is about NO.1 in the village and has mostly foreigners stay there, even though it normally amounts to maybe 12-15 on average.. Just book it and go there, it was Awesome..Thanks Franco...

Stayed here for a night. The advantage of this ryokan is the location. From the bus stop, it is just a 2 minute walk, unfortunately, the name of the ryokan is in Kanji. We were given the best view room on the 2nd floor, facing the garden. However, we find it troublesome each time we need to use the washroom which is located on the 1st floor. Especially in the night, it was so cold when we walked along the corridor. During dinner time, staff explained what we are eating and which item should be first eaten. Dessert was served after the dinner, coffee pudding and green tea chiffon which we enjoyed. Photograph was given as a gift on departure. From our experience, this ryokan lacks the warm and friendliness of most ryokan that we had stayed. Tsumago itself is pretty a small town and peaceful after the tourists left for the day.

What a wonderful surprise to arrive at Fujioto and have the proprietor, Fujihara-san, waiting to greet us. He whisked us upstairs to the Hinoki, special guest room, a most generous upgrade! The American and Italian ambassadors have both stayed in this spacious room. We arrived a bit later than the requested 5pm check in due to a longer than expected drive, but Fujihara-san was very gracious. An exquisite dinner was served in the dining room. Mrs. Fujihara is the chef, and especially renowned for her tempura, which was light and greaseless. The meal included many local delicacies: trout, mountain vegetables, beef and larval wasps! Each course was introduced and explained by Fujihara-san. We fell asleep to the sound of water running through the rice fields and frogs singing in the night. A stay here is highly recommended.

We had an outstanding time at Fujioto Ryokan! We not only found our stay very comfortable, but also very enlightening, particularly about traditional Japanese culture and cuisine. Our room was wonderfully simple and the view was exquisite, and we enjoyed relaxing in our room drinking tea. The food was delicious and getting to try the local cuisine was a special experience, especially as it was all explained to us. Franco and the staff were always very courteous and we felt right at home (especially as we don't speak much Japanese!) We only stayed for one night, but wish we stayed longer. We can't wait to visit again!

We stayed at Fujioto for one night, and it was the highlight of our trip. Our room was very authentic, but spotlessly clean. Everything we needed was provided for us, and the dinner and breakfast was fantastic. Tsumago is a little out of the way to get to, but well worth the trip. Highly recommended!

We have been travelling around Japan for two weeks and thought this Ryokan one of the very best we stayed in. The Ryokan is delightfully located in the heart of Tsumago - you will want to spend some time looking round and exploring the shops, museums and crafts. The staff are all lovely and do their very best to ensure you enjoy your stay and are very comfortable from your arrival to departure - personal, friendly service all the way. The dinner was excellent and the staff are professionally led by Mr and Mrs Fujihara who go to great lengths to explain the use of local and seasonal fish, meat, vegetables and fruits. The presentation, quality and experience at this Ryokan were a highlight of our trip!

We booked months in advance but had to change the day of our booking at the last minute due to a huge typhoon and train cancelations. Fujioto still honoured our original booking, shifting the date and luckily we were able to retain the larger room which was a highlight of our trip. The staff were attentive, helping us with train timetables, taxis and our large bags, and were very friendly. The food was exceptional. Location and village highly recommended.
